Installing the PTRX 9700 in an iCOM IC 9700
Переглядів 2,3 тис.Рік тому
This video provides instructions on how to install the Radio Analog PTRX-9700 into an iCOM IC-9700. I've included a demonstration at the end of the video showing how it can be used with a BATC (British Amateur Television Club) Minitiouner to receive Amateur TV signals using your existing antennas that you have connected to the IC-9700. Note that Amateur TV signals are normally horizontally pola...
Energy Efficiency of antique audio
Переглядів 60Рік тому
Could you ever imagine how energy inefficient modern audio equipment is when compared with their predecessors of 50-60 years ago? Listening to Spotify on a PC or Music streamer will use something like 5-10x the power of the equipment we used in the 1960s and 1970s. Check your own equipment and comment below with the results.

Where were the engines made? Wondering if they're cornish. Good old Richard trevithick to thank regardless.
Great video Justin. I'm going to book a visit next steaming day. 2E0OPL
It’s a most enjoyable day, but ohh that smell! A tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd. :-)
Is that a regular event? I’ve never heard of it. We will have to catch up soon 💯
I’m not sure I just saw it advertised on Facebook
Was the plastic strip mentioned in the unboxing possibly a cable comb? It is probably not an issue if your 9700 is a shack queen but if you take it portable regularly the some cable restraint would be advantageous IMHO. I'd love a 9700 but they are rather expensive and living in a remote city here in WA there is not much VHF and above activity with 23cm being useless. So if Icom were to release a 0649😀 23cm less version at reduced cost I'd be all over it like rash.🤤
They do provide little tool for the connectors, but I prefer to do it with my fingers because I can feel what’s happening
Lucky it wasn't a gang of Travellers racing their nags and carts as they are prone to do on Bank Holidays. With a screen of 4 x 4's behind them!
so?
Motorways in the UK are for motors only, and only faster motors at that. No pedestrians, no cyclists, no mobility scooters. It's a very rare sight, worth posting.
Great video so thanks for taking the time. I've just taken delivery of a V2, so I doubt I'll be able to tune it down to 70cm. Are you are of any instructions online that'll help me make my way around the satfinder. The scrappy bit of paper that came with the unit isn't exactly fulsome. Thanks. Martin - G4EFE
I’d be interested to know how you get on with the v2. I think you’ll likely find it similar from a software configuration point of view.
I bought this model a few years back and only got around to trying it the other day and need to upgrade the firmware. I tried with no success.
Are you sure it's the same version? Be careful to select the correct version of firmware for your hardware, not the old V1's are no longer supported. Mine is later than this.

A man of principle. The lone voice against the scum that sit in parliament. I wish him all the best. He’s brave for standing up for the people. He’s not even my MP and I’ve donated via his website. £20 well spent IMO.
Now that I've met him and seen how he operates (he was there for the entire event) I see that he is very genuine, exactly the sort of MP we all need. My advice is to join up to your local party and help deselect any MP who has been anywhere near Davos.

I didn't follow the fob update. My car is an 2015 P85D with two fobs that look just like yours. Can I update them or is my car too old for the key fob updated you demonstrated?
There is a new version of the key fob available from Tesla. You need to upgrade to version 2 keys to do the update and improve security.
Thumbs up
Thank you for the video
Great little setup. Is the GT Media V8 able to display constellation diagrams? I have seen some conflicting information. The product seems to be, or maybe not, a clone from a Satlink meter 6906
Sadly not no constellation. For this I recommend the BATC Minitiouner and the Windows based Minitioune Software.
Thanks for the video, my T-beam has been out of use for a while and I forgot which button does what! Couple of 868mhz (and one 433mhz) Heltec units on order; hope to relegate the T-beam to use as a repeater unit! Richard G8ITB.
why don't you try a higher gain antenna?
The point was to see how far it could go out of the box, but my permanent repeater installations now use a chimney mounted 8dBi co-linear.
.......pation!
Hi, please can you help me? What’s the unlicensed setting for the UK?
Eu_868
Thank you. I had it set to EU 433mhz. Only had it running for a few minutes. I’m new to this type of device and didn’t want to fall foul of the law.
@@paarker if you have purchased the 433 MHz version then EU_433 is absolutely fine as it’s an ISM band as well. It also happens to be an amateur band, but it’s a shared use band at that frequency. You will find your car keys work on either 433 MHz or 868 MHz as do lots of other things like wireless burglar alarms. But you cannot use is a 915 MHz module, or any other module, apart from those two frequencies as the others are designed for the USA. Just to confirm out of those two frequencies, the one you choose is the one for the modules you have bought. If you operate under amateur conditions, then the restriction is under amateur radio use you cannot use encryption. Of course, there’s nothing to stop you turning encryption off in unlicensed mode. The quid pro quo of the amateur license is you can run much higher power and there is no restriction on the antenna type. You can obtain an amateur radio license fairly easily just look at the RSGB website as to how to do it. The foundation license is straightforward enough a couple of days classroom and the intermediate is generally another three days on top of that you also learn a lot about radio communications. The best way is to join a local radio club. There are lots about just use Google and the RSGB website. If you are within reach of Milton Keynes, the RSGB national radio Centre is based at the Bletchley Park Museum, I volunteer there every other Saturday and we will be delighted to welcome you and spend some time explaining amateur radio and how to obtain a license. I am there this coming Saturday. Justin
@@G8YTZ Thank you for the detailed information, it’s a big help. I have a much clearer understanding. The chip is EU 433. Unfortunately, I live too far to visit Bletchley Park. I will definitely check the website out. Cheers.

Good review 73. M7UAE
73! The i3 is a great city car, we’ve since sold ours and replaced it with a Tesla M3 LR as our use case changed. I 100% recommend it.
G8YTZ. Could you let us know your V8 finder specification from Menu->Tools->Information? Hardware version and software version interested me. Thanks a lot. I am testing now a Dmyco v8 finder (yellow) with lnb set to 10GHz, transponder below 10950MHz is out of range. There is H/W ver. 1.1.0 15/12/2017, S/W ver. 3.02.118.629 15/12/2017. I will try upgrade to GTMedia soft.
Hi G8YTZ. 290-2350MHZ output frequencies are for Wideband LNG with LNB freq. 10410MHz. I have tested GTMedia V8 Finder2, newer version of V8 Finder meter. Unfortunately V8 Finder2 does not accept output freq. below 950MHz. as your V8 Finder meter does. I tested with LB freq. 10000MHz and TP freq. 10290-10949MHz and there is info 'Out of range'. Also LNB freq. 10410MHz is not available. There is 10000, 10450, but not 10410. Does your device support LNB freq. 10410MHz? Thanks for your video.
Thanks for that information. I suspect it’s tied up with the discontinuation of the ST chipset that’s been widely used in things like this, and of course the BATC Minitiouner. Of course, using an SDR with the Portsdown band viewer is a great alternative. The ADALM Pluto works very well with this and delivers a 50 MHz bandwidth.
It receives from 420 mhz?
I’ve tested it down to 430 MHz, specifically that’s the V8 gold with 2022 software or earlier. I haven’t tested the latest software release.
@@G8YTZ can you do a vid on how to make it go down that far?
I wish other brand cars were able to charge with a tesla charger.
In several cases they can, if your car supports CCS. In the local area Dartford (I think) is one of them, definitely Sidcup and Lakeside. Sign up using the Tesla App on your SmartPhone. Also ALL destination chargers that have a white signage are supported for cars with Type-2 connectors (note: red signed chargers are Tesla only. Site owners are allowed to make a charge for non-Tesla cars). www.tesla.com/en_gb/support/non-tesla-supercharging#selected-countries
Great video Justin
It was a great day! So much work went into organising it too.
A quick update, I did some tests today receiving G4XAT. I received Gareth on 437MHz, 146.5MHz (DVB-S2) at various symbol rates between 250kS/s and 1000kS/s and 146.5MHz DVB-T at 333KHz, 500KHz and 1000KHz bandwidth (the latter was 60KHz inside each band edge limit) Great result using the PTRX-9700 and I can confirm the Knucker works perfectly without an attenuator, the Knucker AGC handles the signal levels fine and there was plenty of headroom.
Very nice installation; great to see the Bodnar board was able to be integrated into the whole! Are you using the Bodnar GPS receiver with both the boards installed - and the external pcb adapter board? Look forward to seeing a demo! Richard G8ITB.
Richard, yes, I'm using the Leo Bodnar "Mini Precision GPS Reference Clock" receiver (£110). The board for the IC-9700 costs £27.50 which is why I suggest it is installed at the same time as the PTRX-9700. I tested the GPS lock after installing the PTRX-9700 and it works as expected . The PTRX-9700 external filter board has three ports: One for the radio, one for the GPS unit and one for the SDR Minitioner/SDR output. The main "risky" part of the installation is handling those UFL connectors and there's 9 of them! I mis-spoke in the video a couple of times, Radio Analog provide 4 of those little UFL cables, so you have everything you need. The Leo Bodnar supplied SMA connector is also useful for the SDR output too. My only wish was that Radio Analog provided a 3D printed case for the external filter board, I'm sure someone will come up with a design.
Hi Justin. I have a few of these cables I'd like to modify. My Model S has a button to release the cable, but, the Model Y doesn't have the release button. I wondered if you knew what the cable does for the stop and disconnect function. I know the open port sends a few bursts of RF. To stop and disconnect, I believe it signals over the Proximity Pilot signal somehow. I wondered if you knew what it does? Thanks and 73. George M1GEO. 📻
George, It’s a simple 433.9MHz signal modulated with a tone. AM is I remember right. The car needs to be unlocked to open the charge port. EV Charge King do complete cables to custom length, or you can just buy the connector to replace an existing one. They should work with all Teslas except (of course) the original roadster, just like at a supercharger. ‘73 Justin. www.evchargeking.com/en/t/tesla
@@G8YTZ Thanks Justin. The AM TX opens the door when the cable isn't connected. Unfortunately it doesn't stop the charge. However, adding 150R in series with the PP signal does. Turns out it's basically the same as the J1772 release latch button. Just in case anyone else has the question. Thanks though! Evchargeking cables do look good!
@@m1geo The only thing is after a few years, you’re going to have to replace the little module or don’t leave it out when it’s raining! Sorry, I forgot to mention about the method of disconnecting, but I think you’re right I haven’t looked at the circuit, but yes there is a wire to the PP pin to the module.
good work. LoRa is awesome
Incidentally, for home streaming services I also found that Deezer supports continuation albums. The other issue with Apple Music is that it can only be played using Apple software as it is DRM limited, not directly (for example) on a high quality streamer like the Linn. The work-round is to use Airplay, but this is a pain. Apple need to sort this and have an equivalent to Spotify Connect as well as supporting continuation albums.
Hello sir, I’m student from Indonesia, I want to ask how to set the screen settings so that incoming and sent text messages can be seen, and also how to display them for each connected node? I really hope you can help and reply to my message. Thank you
Puede ser en español ?
You probably didn’t set it to highest resolution for Apple Music. That’s why it sounded horrible.
Unfortunately the Tesla car application does not give you that option, you are stuck with try base service. One work-round for an improved experience is to use your phone with bluetooth audio, but then you run the possibility of getting into trouble with the police by using a phone whilst driving, so best stick to the Tesla app. I've not yet tried Apple Music on my Linn streamer. I'll do that over Christmas.
@@G8YTZ you are supposed to set high resolution for Apple Music at your phone which will then propagate to your Tesla Apple Music app.
@@tnyshare2938 Unfortunately it does not.
@@G8YTZ perhaps, the problem is with Tesla. The Apple Music app is available in newer Samsung and lg TVs. They sound fantastic when played through my sonos home theatre system.
@@tnyshare2938 The video is a review about the new Apple Music app as available in Tesla vehicles. Any other platforms are out of scope of the video. I did not comment on other delivery platforms.
Shame as Apple Music has a fantastic catalogue of loss, less and high res audio. This along with track gaps surely can be fixed with future updates. In the meantime I’ll stick with my music library via USB
What also really annoys me about streaming services is they keep changing their catalogue and updating tracks with awful "remastered" versions or even deleting tracks from their catalogue and removing words and verses to pander to the woke agenda, so over time your playlists are destroyed. Buying your own tracks is really the only way forward now.
@@G8YTZ couldn’t agree more! I generally use streaming services to discover new music then only buy a hard copy of what I really like.
Do you need to have the paid version of tidal fir it to work ? I couldn’t get it to work on the free tidal option.
Yes, only the paid version is supported. The Tidal Hi-Fi version is also required for the improved audio quality.
Tesla probably still needs to do som tweaking with Apple Music because Apple music supports lossless audio
It is rumoured that Dolby Atmos will come to Tesla cars with Apple Music, perhaps that will be the turning point. The car certainly has the capability of playing 24-Bit 192kHz FLAC files.
@@G8YTZ that would be really nice
Thanks Justin. Good reviews and update.
Thanks for the feedback, I suppose mine will now have it too as It's just done an update this morning, I'll have a look. Is a 3 second stop between tracks really that annoying though? Think I could live with it.
In June 1948 Columbia introduced the Long-Playing record. I think in 2022 we should expect better than this. The audio quality is also significantly below par.
@@G8YTZ The quality is the real issue for me, what's the point in having premium sound in the car when the playback quality is so mediocre via the apps?!
@@NewmanAutomotive I agree, the best quality has to be from a USB stick with FLAC files, but the FM Radio is good as long as the source is uncompressed. At home I have traditional British Hi-Fi.

I reflashed my device and want to put this software back on. Is there a download for it?

thanks.
I have Meshtastic 1.3.26 and only the left button works to restart. I don't know what software you are using but your suggestions do not work on my two units. Its shocking and offensive as to the lack of support for beginners with this device.
It’s quite an old video now. I am planning a new video that is up to date with the latest version. I’m installing two new nodes in SE London and will include this information too.

Can Meshtastic be used as a tracker? Can it show GPS or distance between units? Can one unit be put to sleep until it gets a signal?
GPS location is a standard feature that this can handle.

There's a more specific term for the particular type of floor in that room, if anyone knows? As I understand it parquet is a more general term.
